On the March 11, Japan suffered what has been described as a 1000 year event. The earthquake and tsunami destroyed 400km of coastline, killing over 10,000 people, leaving 400,000 people homeless, and has triggered a nuclear situation that is still unfolding.

Japan has inspired designers for many generations, it is the reason we traveled to this country 20 years ago, and have since made it our home. Japan is where the "PechaKucha 20 images x 20 seconds" show-and-tell event format was born, and it has gone on to inspire designers to get together in 400 cities around the world, to share their creativity at more than 1000 events each year.

Japan has inspired us all, now is it our turn to "Inspire Japan."

Please join us and be a part of Global PechaKucha Day - Inspire Japan. Let's all come together and show Japan that the creative world is thinking of them, that all is not lost, and that it is possible to stand up and rebuild, even in villages and towns which have been completely destroyed. With creativity and passion, anything is possible.

We are partnering with some good people to bring you a special edition of PechaKucha Night that will serve as a fundraiser for gulf relief efforts and raise awareness as to what is happening and how people can best donate time, money and effort to the cause.

What is PechaKucha Night?

PechaKucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

The key to PechaKucha Night is its patented democratic system. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

PechaKucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global - as PechaKucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 400 cities across the world.

In essence, PK is a conversation starter, a networking opportunity, and an informal night for folk to come together, share and draw inspiration. And just as crucially, it’s a brilliant night out- DJs, visual treats, and a chance to connect with ideas and creatives in our disparate community.
